A Description of the Home and Facilities

Dawson House was built in 1947.  It is a spacious house located in a quiet, leafy, suburban area in Carshalton, Surrey. 

The accommodation has been totally refurbished, is bright and fresh.  It is situated over two floors and is very spacious.  It comprises 6 bedrooms, all of which are in excess of 12 sq.mts. and each has additional en suite facilities.  5 bedrooms are on the first floor, two at one side of the house and three at the other side of the house.  The 6th bedroom is situated on the ground floor for an individual with poorer mobility.  Each of the six bedrooms has optimum privacy and has its own lock/key which is owned by the Service User occupying the room, although designated staff on each shift have access to a key to open any room in emergency if required.  This key is the responsibility of the Management and shift leader on duty and is kept in a secure area. 

Each service user also has a lockable area within their room for private possessions.  The Home has a safe for items of particular value which service users may wish to use.  Items kept on behalf of a service user are recorded and kept on file as an added security. 

The house is fully furnished and all bedrooms have a bed, bedside table, wardrobe and  comfortable chair/s, shelves or other furniture as required.  Service users can provide their own furniture/TV or other equipment if preferred and personalise their room as they wish. 

Downstairs there is also a large kitchen/diner and two spacious living rooms.  There is a large in and out driveway to the front of the house with ample space for cars to accommodate visits.  At the rear of the house there is also a large attractive and interesting garden, which has a spacious terrace and laid to lawn grass area.  Service Users are encouraged to take a keen interest in the garden, supporting its development for the future. 

All maintenance and repairs to the home internally/externally are carried out by independent contractors to ensure reliability and quality.  A list of such contractors and emergency numbers are kept on the Notice Board in the Office for staff to access as and when necessary. 

Service Users each have a ‘home’ day, which is chosen by them, and are encouraged to clean their room, with the support of staff. 

The Home is equipped with Fire Alarm and Fire precautions.  Fire drills are carried out once a month and Fire call points and equipment checked each week under the Home’s Health & Safety precautions. 

The house is centrally heated with thermostatic control and lockable regulator on each radiator.

The Physical Environment

This spacious house is situated in Carshalton, which is very close to Wallington, Croydon and Sutton.  Carshalton Beeches railway station is approximately a quarter of a mile away giving access to Sutton Croydon and Central London.  Bus links to these places are also very easily accessible.  The property is close to local shops, recreation grounds and approximately half a mile distant from Wallinton for most major retail outlets, and two miles distant from Croydon, which offers many facilities.  Shoppers from a wide area travel to Sutton which is a tree-lined, flower filled town centre and pedestrianised High Street.  The under-cover St Nicholas and Times Square shopping malls offer a superb selection of retailers together with many individual shops and plenty of interesting places to eat and drink. 

Sutton also offers a state of the art six screen UCI cinema complex and two popular theatres and its central library has won international awards for its services.  There are also two multi-purpose leisure centres plus a wide range of other sports facilities.  The Westcroft Leisure Centre in particular is a multi-purpose recreation venue catering for water based and dry activities.  The facilities and recreational opportunities are available to all ages and ability levels, including those with disabilities.
